VIDEOGAMES

Our children don't even know what arcade  video games are

Once upon a time there was an ancient thing, now disused and useless, called the arcade video game. Once upon a time there were arcades, that magical place where kids hung out on long summer afternoons or even in cases where they decided to skip school (bad kids, very bad).

Once upon a time there were local 1-on-1s , not via the Internet as with today's consoles. Once upon a time there were games where controlling FPS was totally useless, because you didn't play for the graphics. It was the era of fighting games and Pac-man, of Metal Slug and Puzzle Bubble.

If you are under 20 years old you might find out something about early video games, if you are older it could be a wonderful dive into the past, don't miss it.

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
Sonic, the very fast blue hedgehog, was created by SEGA to rival the Super Mario of Nintendo. In the long run this feat did not succeed, but the first Sonic cabine version is still one of the best in the entire series. Collecting rings along the way is the main purpose of the game.

Tekken series (since 1995, on arcade and other platforms)
One of the most successful fighting series ever, thanks in part to its presence on consoles Sony such as at playstatio and beyond. One could choose a series of crazy characters to pummel each other until one of them collapsed. Many people know it mainly for its console version, where it had several sequels, but the cabin version had that hint of violence typical of the 1990s.

NBA Jam (1993)
This is one of the craziest sports video games ever, rivaling much more recent console titles such as for example FIFA Street (and its worse version, namely Volta). This video game was inspired by street basket, therefore 2 vs 2 challenges with almost no rules. Pure fun, pure extreme speed. And we liked it even if similar to reality there was not even the ball.

Metal Slug (the first in 1996)
One of the most beautiful and historic games of its generation. Set in the distant future back in the day (2028), it was a level-based horizontal shooter in which you could choose one of four characters. With one token you had three lives, and in case of defeat you always had to start over (kind of like today's Souls, where you have one and only one life). "Heavy Machine Gun" is the sound that many of us still have in our heads and that brings a smile to our faces every time.

Donkey Kong (the first in 1981)
Produced by Nintendo in 1981, its popularity was also due to crossover with other Nintendo games, foremost among them Super Mario, of which it also became the main antagonist in games such as Mario Kart. The game consisted of climbing as high as possible while avoiding the objects that Donkey Kong (one of the best examples of Villain as a main character) threw. All for the purpose of saving the beautiful girlfriend. The narrative structure is obviously reminiscent of the final scenes of King Kong.

Street fighter (the first in 1987)
This is "the arcade game" par excellence. A brutal fighting game full of characters that have become iconic, and a franchise that still continues today on platforms such as Playstation 4 and 5. The game is structured as 1 vs. 1 matches, and each character has his or her own typical moves and fatality (i.e., finishing moves). Books, TV series, board games, and more have also been structured on this video game.

Pac-man (first version in 1980)
Along with Street Fighter, Pac-man is the king of this type of video game. Over its 43-year history it has been released for virtually every type of platform, and this has helped increase its popularity worldwide. The object of the game is to guide a yellow ball (Pac-Man) in eating all the dots on the screen without getting hit by the four ghosts hunting you.
